Biosecurity Strategy for New Zealand

Administered by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, to protect the economy, environment and people's health from pests and diseases.

Department of Conservation (DOC)

The Crown agency responsible for conservation. The department's staff can advise on how to identify, maintain and, where necessary, enhance nature conservation values. DOC has regional conservancy offices throughout New Zealand.

Landcare Research

A Crown research institute and gateway to a wealth of information about New Zealand plants, animals and soils, and research being undertaken.

Ministry for the Environment

Advises the Government on policies, laws, regulations and other means of improving environmental management.

Nature Heritage Fund

Administered by the Department of Conservation, provides a range of protection mechanisms including land purchase, where appropriate, to protect indigenous forest.

New Zealand Historic Places Trust

The Crown agency for the care and protection of historic places in New Zealand. Has branches throughout the country.

Nga Whenua Rahui

Administered by the Department of Conservation, this is a ministerial fund which helps Maori landowners identify and protect land with significant indigenous forest on it.

NZ Landcare Trust

Helps communities set up landcare groups and offers help accessing information or funding.

Permanent Forest Sinks Initiative

Provides an opportunity for landowners to earn tradable emission units under Kyoto Protocol rules for the carbon stored in permanent forests that they establish. Administered by the Indigenous Forestry Unit of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry.
